Club icon Sander de Wijn one season longer at Kampong
Kampong has extended the contract of club icon Sander de Wijn. The 34-year-old defender and captain of Kampong will thus continue to play for the Utrecht club next season, starting his eighteenth season with the main squad.
De Wijn made his debut for Kampong in 2008 and has since become a regular in the team as well as in the Tulp Hoofdklasse. Last season, he was voted Best Player of the Hoofdklasse.
'Next year, I will play exactly half my life in this shirt,' De Wijn commented on his contract extension. 'The journey with Kampong is one of growth, challenges and unforgettable moments. I hope to contribute with my passion and dedication not only to performance on the pitch, but also to inspire others.'
The Kampong board is also delighted with the contract extension. 'Sander is a club man pur sang and still one of the best in the league,' said Roderick Weusthof, board member of top hockey. Wijns' list of honours underlines that: he was three times national champion with Kampong, won the Euro Hockey League and was named Best Player of the Hoofdklasse three times.
