League start Den Bosch special, but not unique
The women of Den Bosch closed the first half of the competition with thirteen wins from the first thirteen games of the season. How special is that sterling run?
As the only team in the Tulp Hoofdklasse Women, frontrunner Den Bosch has not yet lost a single point in this competition. The 1-0 home victory over Amsterdam last Saturday (Sanne Koolen's goal) brings the tally to thirteen wins in thirteen games for coach Marieke Dijkstra's team.
Automatically, Den Bosch's sterling run raises the question of how special it is. A dip into premier league history reveals that only three times has there been a longer winning streak from the league start.
In 2017-2018, it was Den Bosch itself that won the first seventeen games of the season. Only during the eighteenth round of play did the Brabanders lose points for the first time: 0-0 on a visit to Laren.
HGC holds the record
Amsterdam won its first nineteen games in 2004-2005 only to draw in the away match against HGC (2-2). The team that holds the premier league record is HGC. That had an almost perfect season in 1987-1988.
Only on the last (!) round of play, in the championship match against an equally stable Amsterdam, the Gazelles lost their first point (1-1 at the Wagener). Thus, for HGC a series of 21 wins in a row from the first round ended, but the team could celebrate the national title.
