Goalgetters: the unique weapon of Ageeth Boomgaardt
The Tulp Hoofdklasse Women broke the 20,000-goal mark in the first half of the season. A great occasion to zoom in on the biggest goal scoring machines in the women's league. In part 3: Ageeth Boomgaardt.
Boomgaardt broke through to the general public as a Den Bosch player from the late nineties, but before that, the Brabant native was already making name for herself with close neighbour MOP from Vught. Under the guidance of former coach and penalty corner guru Toon Siepman, Boomgaardt grew to become the central figure of MOP, training for hours every week to perfect her weapon - the penalty corner.
She succeeded so well that Boomgaardt became the first female penalty corner specialist with a powerful and deadly drag flick. This new technique did not harm her: her 58 goals for MOP propelled the Vught team to the top of the Hoofdklasse in the early nineties, and the club even qualified for the play-offs twice.
After six seasons at MOP, Boomgaardt returned to Den Bosch in 1997, the club with which she was promoted to the highest level in 1990. At the Oosterplas, a plan was forged to break the hegemony of Amsterdam and HGC and finally bring the national title to the south of the country. They succeeded in a way that amazed everyone.
Together with Mijntje Donners and Dilianne van den Boogaard, Boomgaardt was the leading player for years in an unbroken run of eventually 11 national titles. It also earned her a permanent spot in the Dutch women's national team, where she was a key player with 84 goals in 195 international matches.
Boomgaardt made it through seven national titles for Den Bosch. She quit top hockey at the end of the 2003-2004 season. The centre-mid had left a firm footprint with the club: with 149 goals, mostly from the penalty corner, she had a huge share in the success series. That number still puts her among Den Bosch's four most prolific players of all time in the Hoofdklasse.
