SCHC's Yibbi Jansen best hockey player in the world
Yibbi Jansen was named World Player of the Year on Friday night. The 24-year-old midfielder of SCHC and the Dutch national team was presented with her award at the FIH Congress in Oman.
For 82-time international Jansen (71 goals, 13 assists), it is the first time she has won this global award. The SCHC midfielder and penalty corner diva won the fifth season of the FIH Pro League with the Oranje in 2024 and, of course, also captured the Olympic title in Paris.
Jansen's part in that was considerable. She became top goalscorer of the Olympic tournament with nine goals and, with 19 goals, was also the best shooter in the Pro League season. With 25 goals in 22 international games, she has been leading the 2024 top scorer list in global women's hockey for months.
Thirteenth Dutch winner
Jansen is the successor to her teammate Xan de Waard (SCHC), who was voted best hockey player in the world in 2023 by a large margin. It is the thirteenth time that an international of the Dutch women's team has received the award.
Before De Waard, Felice Albers, Eva de Goede (twice), Naomi van As (twice), Maartje Paumen (twice), Lidewij Welten, Ellen Hoog, Minke Booij and Mijntje Donners won the award.
Among the men, Dutch internationals Thierry Brinkman (Den Bosch) and Joep de Mol (Oranje-Rood) were nominated for the prestigious award. However, they didn't win the award, as did Amsterdam goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal.
