All or nothing: Laren and Hurley battle each other for survival
Laren and Hurley conclude their regular season on Saturday afternoon with a clash in which the task is crystal clear. On the field at the Schapendrift in Laren, the decision will be made who will be relegated directly from the Tulp Hoofdklasse Men and who will get another route to survival via the play-outs.
The starting position is simple. Hurley starts the final round of play-offs as the last one, with four points from 21 games. Laren is one place higher and has one point more. That means Hurley must win to surrender last place to Laren. For Laren, a draw is enough to reach the play-offs.
Based on the mutual history, Laren has a small lead. The teams met nine times before in the Hoofdklasse. Laren won four times, Hurley twice and three matches ended undecided. On Laren's pitch, the balance is completely balanced: one win for the home team, one for Hurley and two draws.
Nevertheless, Hurley will draw confidence from the recent encounters. The Amstelveners remained unbeaten in the last three Hoofdklasse matches with Laren: 0-3, 3-2 and earlier this season 3-3. In that outing, Laren seemed to be on their way to an important win, but ten minutes before time Hjalmar Voskuil equalised for Hurley. As a result, the matches ended 3-3.
The last edition of Laren-Hurley in the Hoofdklasse at Schaerweijde dates from 22 September 2013. Then Hurley won 0-3, thanks to goals by Kenny Bain, Phelle Maguire and Janiek Braaksma. Striking detail: Bain now plays for Laren, the very team that should prevent Hurley from beating Schaerweijde again on Saturday.
Bad series
Sportingly, both teams come to the denouement with little confidence. Laren lost its last 10 matches in the Hoofdklasse and has been waiting for a win for 13 matches. The last win dates from 26 October 2025, when Bloemendaal were beaten 3-2 at home. Since then, defeats have piled up. Especially defensively, Laren had a hard time: with 94 goals against, the team is the most passed formation in the league.
Hurley is also having a difficult season. The team lost nine of its last ten matches and only took three points at HDM in that series: 1-2. In total, Hurley remained winless in 30 of its last 31 Hoofdklasse games. The team conceded 82 goals this season; only Laren gave up more.
On the other hand, Laren was significantly more productive offensively. Laren's players have scored 34 goals this season, exactly twice as many as Hurley, which reached 17. But in a match where tension, pressure and interests outweigh ranking logic, that figure only tells part of the story.
Stakes crystal clear
Saturday in Laren is not about fine series, historical margins or statistical nuances. It is about survival. Laren needs just one point, Hurley must win. This makes the stakes on the last round crystal clear: one team can keep hoping, the other will drop out of the Hoofdklasse.
