Amsterdam sign Belgian defender Olivier Biekens
Amsterdam has strengthened their squad for next season with Olivier Biekens. The 26-year-old Belgian defender comes over from Braxgata, where he played his entire career and was active in the first team for ten seasons.
For Biekens, who accounted for 28 international matches on behalf of Belgium, the move to the Tulp Hoofdklasse means his first foreign adventure. Within Amsterdam, the reaction to Biekens' arrival is delighted. According to Joris Albers of the top hockey committee, the Belgian brings both experience and offensive impetus. 'He is a modern defender who is defensively strong and plays forward with conviction. Moreover, he fits well with the club's identity and ambition.'
Biekens himself is hugely looking forward to next season. 'After ten seasons at Braxgata, this felt like the right time for a new environment. I expect this step to be good for my development, both as a player and as a person.'
The defender is also looking forward to playing matches at Wagener Stadium, a place he has known since childhood. 'As a young boy I walked around here during the Sportways camps, so to be able to actually stand on this pitch soon is special.'
