Unprecedented: first time no win after a Burg goal

Ramon Min|13.03.2025

Last Sunday's 2-2 draw against Hurley was more than just a blot on Den Bosch's impressive winning streak. It also slashed a personal statistic that seemed almost too good to be true.

It was the first time Sunday that Den Bosch did not win after a goal by Joosje Burg. The fast striker levelled the score with a backhand just after half-time: 1-1. In no less than 56 (!) previous official matches, a goal by her had always contributed to a victory, but that remarkable series came to an end on Sunday.

Burg's 'magical' series began on 19 November 2014, when, as a 17-year-old, she scored her first official goal for Den Bosch Ladies 1 in a home match with Bloemendaal. What followed was a record that reads like a fairy tale: 55 games with a Burg goal, 55 wins. Whether it was in the Hoofdklasse (42 times), the play-offs (7), the cup tournament (6) or the Euro Hockey League (1)-her goals were synonymous with wins. Until now.

Small consolation: in Oranje, her golden goal-scoring series is still intact. The Dutch team has so far won all 18 international matches in which she scored. And if history is any indication, it will be some time before that pattern is broken.
