Maria Verschoor announces departure from Amsterdam and Oranje
Maria Verschoor is leaving Amsterdam after this season. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder also announced to stop as a national team international with immediate effect.
Verschoor would prefer to continue her hockey career with a club abroad after the summer. 'I have always dreamed of playing hockey abroad for a year,' she explained in an interview with Hockey.nl on Wednesday. 'After thirteen years in the Hoofdklasse, I want something different.'
Verschoor has been playing on behalf of Amsterdam in the Tulp Hoofdklasse since 2012. Before that, she broke through as a talent with Rotterdam. As a club hockey player, she will not hang up her stick, but she will quit as a national team player immediately.
Fancy other things
Although she initially planned to join the training group, she recently changed her mind during her hockey break. 'I didn't expect that myself at all, but I am very fulfilled. Had a super nice career. I don't need another European Championship or World Cup. I feel like doing other things,' Verschoor said.
Verschoor played 214 international matches for the Oranje between 2013 and 2024, in which she scored 32 times and gave 20 assists. She won the Olympics twice, the European Championship four times and the World Cup once. In total, she captured 14 top prizes with the Oranje. The hit and decisive penalty stroke in the Olympic final against China last summer was her last feat as an international.
