Penalty corner king Timo Boers chases club record from 1998
With three rounds of play remaining, the Tulp Hoofdklasse Men has a new top scorer: Timo Boers, the 21-year-old defender from Den Bosch. He is nearing the 30-goal mark.
Boers hit no fewer than five goals for his team last Sunday in the home match against Hurley (8-1 win): he exploited four penalty corners - his speciality - and also converted a penalty stroke. The five-goal haul took his total to 26 goals. In doing so, he leaves Amsterdam attacker Boris Burkhardt (24 goals) behind for the time being.
For Boers, it was his first time to score five goals in a league game - although he had also put five dashes behind his name in the cup game with Push earlier this season.
In Den Bosch's rich premier league history, Boers is only the third player to pull off this feat. Only club icon Matthijs Brouwer (2002) and German player Jan-Marco Montag (2009) did it before him.
Club record up for grabs
With 26 goals this season and three regular league games to go, Boers has a great chance to improve a club record that has been in the books for 27 years. It stands in the name of former Dutch national Piet-Hein Geeris, who scored 28 goals for Den Bosch in the 1997-1998 premier league season, a still unmatched feat.
