Amsterdam qualified for the play-offs on Sunday, but the relief had a bitter aftertaste. The 0-3 home defeat against Pinoké confirmed what has been palpable at Wagener Stadium for months: on their own pitch, the team looks vulnerable.
The match against Pinoké was the 11th and final home match of the season. Amsterdam won five times in it, a rare low number. Only in 1995-1996 (four) and 1993-1994 (three) was the number of home wins lower. For a team that usually reigns supreme at Wagener Stadium, those are figures that chafe.
In total, Amsterdam lost 14 points at home: four draws and two defeats. In 54 per cent of home matches, therefore, no win was recorded. Only in 1995-1996 (63%) and 1993-1994 (72%) was that percentage even higher.
Yet it was not all against. If there were wins, they were often convincing. HDM was beaten 5-1, HGC 5-2 and Huizen 6-0. The last two home wins even yielded fourteen goals: 8-2 against Rotterdam and 6-1 against Oranje-Rood.
But it was precisely in the top games that Amsterdam got stuck. In the last seven home games against Den Bosch, SCHC, Kampong and Pinoké, not once was a win (four draws, three defeats). And look back even further: only three wins in the last seventeen home matches against these top four. That means work to do for the 21-time national champion.
Amsterdam further lost 14 points in its 11 home matches. That happened through four draws and two defeats. De Nooijer's formation thus failed to win 54 percent of its home games, a percentage that was only higher in 1995-1996 (63 percent) and 1993-1994 (72 percent).
Against these lesser statistics, however, there were some strong wins for the Amsterdammers. Because when they did win, they often did so with conviction. They won 5-1 against HDM, 5-2 against HGC and 6-0 against Huizen. The last two home victories yielded 14 goals: 8-2 against Rotterdam and 6-1 against Oranje-Rood.
'The 0-3 felt like a crazy result,' Amsterdam coach Teun de Noiijer said afterwards. 'We played a strong first half, created enough chances and took nine corners in the whole match. But clearly we didn't get enough return.'
